Traditionally, the asparagus season is short and intensive: the first goods -produced via heated cultivation- will arrive at the market at the end of February at the earliest, and by June 24th at the latest, the whole thing is over again. This is precisely why it is so important that asparagus processing…

Weighing equipment can bring balance to produce processing bottom lines— produceprocessing.net/article/weighi…

If there’s one lesson that COVID-19 has taught us it’s that flexibility will be one of our greatest tools going forward. The pandemic has presented labor complications and created volatility in terms of consumer demand.

As a result, processors have had to find ways to respond quickly, sometimes with minimal staff, all while maintaining high food safety standards and reducing waste. Those challenges have been enormous. Three companies explain how weighing equipment can bring balance to your bottom line.

IPL Macro, Fairfield, Calif., is revamping the MacroBin 26 almost three decades after it was introduced to produce growers, with design enhancements to make it more durable.

The MacroBin 26 NG (Next Generation) will be available to growers this fall. It features reinforced columns allowing them to act as bumpers, absorbing the impact to reduce damage, according to a news release. A cross pattern design in the base also increases strength.

The design creates a “bruise buffer zone,” reducing the bulging of bin walls so produce doesn’t suffer side impact.

“We are very excited about the latest addition to our MacroBin family of products.” Todd Weitekamp, vice president of sales, said in the release. “At Macro we always strive to create products that help our customers as we continue to aim towards more sustainable supply chain solutions.”

The MacroBin 26 NG comes in fully-vented and solid-wall configurations. Drain holes have been added to the rim and more ventilation in the sides and base are designed for faster cooling, according to the release.

Finally, the updated version has smoother interiors and rounded corners to reduce damage to product and make sanitation easier

Compac’s UltraView produce inspection module has been recognized by the New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards program as the 2020 winner of the Most Innovative Agritech Solution of the year.

UltraView was launched by Compac, which is part of the TOMRA Food family of companies, in late 2019.

UltraView maximizes the performance of Compac’s Spectrim, a powerful grading platform for fresh fruit and vegetables. UltraView’s advantage is its capability to reliably find defects in fresh produce that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to detect because of shape and/or location.

The UltraView module contains a set of high-resolution multi-spectral (color and infrared) cameras and LED lights which are located close to the fruit, parallel to its direction of travel. In this position, the UltraView cameras generate high-quality images for close inspection of the fruit’s stem bowl and tip regions.
